Preliminary task

Actual magazine

Throughout this task I feel that I have learnt a lot about how to make the text on my magazine stand out, look clear and how to choose a font that relates to my target audience. I learnt to put a drop shadow on the text to make the text stand out on the page and make it look less ‘flat’. Also I learnt that I needed to change the font of my text so it relates to my target audience better, I decided on the font by looking at similar magazines such as ‘Q’ and ‘NME’  and basing my font on those magazines as they relate to my target audience.

Throughout this task I have gained a greater understanding of photography and learnt how to use certain equipment to help create better pictures. My first image in the preliminary task was quite blurry and not sharp enough however when I came to taking the image for my actual magazine cover I used a tripod to make the image look in focus and sharp. Also  the use of Photoshop allowed me to change the light levels on the photo to make the image look sharper and brighter also to edit the photo to remove and imperfections on the image.

My understanding of font has progressed as I decided to look into similar magazines and look at their font. The magazines I looked at were ‘Q’ and ‘NME’. By looking at these magazines I decided on my final font. Also on the front cover of my magazine I decided to put a drop shadow on all of the text so it stood out and didn’t blend in with the main image. Also by using a drop shadow it makes to text more appealing and eye catching to the reader. However on the preliminary task I did not put a drop shadow on any of my text and I think that the text looks ‘flat’ and not interesting enough to catch the readers eye that is why I included a drop shadow on my actual magazine.
  Layout of contents page

Preliminary task

Actual magazine

Throughout this task I learnt a lot about the layout of pages in magazines. I learnt that text and images need to be put into columns. In my preliminary task I did not use any columns on my contents page and therefore I think it looks unorganised and empty. However by carrying out research on similar magazines and looking in to the conventions of magazines I learnt that columns are needed to make a page easy to read and to make them look clear. So I decided to put my contents into 2 separate columns. Making one column larger than the other helped to stick to the convention of having 3 equal columns.

The text on my final magazine contents page is the same as my front cover font which is ‘Cambria’ this is so my magazine sets a house style that will be used in every issue of the magazine. On the preliminary task I only wrote the page number and what the page was called however this did not stand out enough as all the text was the same size and the same font and colour, therefore on my actual contents page of my magazine I decided to make the page numbers red and large with a back shadow so the numbers would stand out and draw the reader to the pages. I then wrote the page name in capital letters followed by a short description on the magazine in lower case to tell the reader more about the page. This made the contents page more interesting and attractive to the reader.
