Plans for magazine:sketches,mock ups etc

Front Page
The colours of the magazine are red, black and white, the three simple colours complement each other and makes the text easy to read and stand out and therefore attract the reader to the magazine. These colours also relate to my genre of indie rock I found this out when doing magazine analysis and found that music magazines such as NME and Q use similar colours that attract the indie rock audience. The font I mostly use will be Calibri as it is clear to read and simple. The house style will be represented throughout the magazine.
The main image of my magazine will be a close up of my model; even though the main front cover image does not link with my DPS it shows that the magazine has a lot of variety witch draws in the reader. My main image conveys indie rock music, this is due to the styling of the model e.g. the buttoned up shirts and straight hair. This stereotypes the indie rock genre and relates to my selected audience of 16-20 year olds. The main image of my magazine directly addresses the audience. This is done by having the model on a 45° angle and facing the camera and having the models on eye level with the reader. The main image will be placed below the masthead, this is because my magazine name needs to be established with the reader as it will be the first issue .Also the main cover line will not cover the face of the model so direct address can be kept.
The masthead of the magazine will be ‘The Pretentious’ and will fill the width of the cover. The font will be simple and bold and will be white text with a bold black outline. This fits in and conveys the house style of my magazine and will present a smart simple magazine that links in with the indie rock genre. The price and issue date will be just below the masthead on the left hand side. The font will be Calibri and the text will be black and bold and serif.
The skyline will have the offer free posters to the readers. The posters will be of indie rock bands and will attract the audience as they are free and are relevant to the genre and magazine. By offering free posters it offers something more to the magazine and shows the reader that the magazine has a lot of variety and choice. The Sky line will say ‘FREE! Posters  Inside!’ The font will be Calibri .The ‘FREE!’ text will be in bold red text and the ‘Posters Inside!’ text will be black text. This is too drawing readers to the magazine and to show they are getting value for money.
On the left hand side of the front cover will be three insert images of other bands and artists that relate to the indie rock genre. This is to show the magazine has a lot of variety and to also draw the reader into wanting to read the magazine to find out about the bands. The insert images will not obstruct any of the headline, masthead or cover image. Below each image will be the band or artists name. The font will be Calibri and the text will be in red. This once again establishes the house style of the magazine and relates to the indie rock genre.
The barcode will be in the bottom right hand corner of the magazine ,out of the way of any text or images. It is placed here as it is the last thing the reader wants to see however is essential for the sales of the magazine.
The main cover line will be the largest text on the front cover and anchors the main image and helps the reader identify who is in the image. The text will read ‘Beth Urwin’ this is who the artist is on the front cover of my magazine and this tells the reader who she is. The First letter of the word ‘Beth’ will be a capital letter and red so will the word ‘Urwin’ this is to once again reinforce the house style of the magazine also to draw attention to the image and cover line. The font will be Calibri. The boldness of the text and the image makes the reader want to read more about the artist.
The front cover offers over cover lines of features that appear in the magazine. They will be placed in the bottom left hand corner of the magazine The buzz word ‘PLUS!’ will be in red and capital letters ,the font will be Calibri this will encourage the reader to read the other articles and shows the magazine has a lot of variety. The titles of the cover lines will be in black. This once again reinforces the house style and relates to the indie rock genre by offering things that appeal to the audience such as gig guides and album reviews.
There will be a puff on the right hand side of the magazine just above the main cover line. This offers something more to the reader. The puff will be red and the text will be black capital letters reading ‘First Edition’ the colours relate to the house style and indie rock genre and tells the reader the magazine is new.

Contents Page

The contents page will be set out into two equal columns .At the top left hand side of the first column of my contents page will be the name of the magazine- ‘The Pretentious’ this reinforces the magazine name and establishes it even further as it is the first issue. Also at the top left hand side will be the issue number. The text will be in black and serif and a thin red line will underline the text. This reinforces the house style of the magazine.
Below the issue number and magazine name will be the word contents. The word will be red and will look distorted, even though this doesn’t apply to the house style of the magazine it does relate more to the rock-indie genre as the distorted letters look loud and slightly harsher.  This relates to the music genre of indie rock e.g. the use of guitars in songs.

I will use this font to create this look however the text will be red to fit in with the house style of the magazine.
The numbers witch navigate the reader to the correct page will be red to stand out and will anchor the text about the page. After each page number will be the page title and some information about the page. The text will be white, font Calibri about size 11 this text will draw the reader in and will make them want to read more about the features that relate to the indie rock genre and the house style is once again shown and helps relate to the indie rock genre. The page names will be in bold and capital letters to stand out from the rest of the information. This once again makes it easier for the reader to navigate to the page they want quickly as they are able to look for the page number and title.
Below each page number and information about the page will be a thin red line. This will separate the page information up and will make it easy for the reader to understand the text and the red fits in with the house style.
In the second column a main image will fill 2/3rds of the column and the image will be of the main DPS in the magazine. This shows that the magazine has a variety to read and will make the reader want to read more about the article as it is represented as the main feature on the contents page meaning most readers will be drawn to this page first rather than any of the other pages in the magazine. The image will have a large number in red on the bottom left hand side this reinforces what page number the main feature is on and also relates to the house style of the magazine.
Below this main image will be the editor’s letter. This welcomes the reader to the magazine and makes the magazine feel more personal as the letter has direct address to the reader. The letter will describe what’s inside the magazine and helps reinforce the indie rock genre by the language used. The editors letter will have a small image on the bottom right hand corner to make the letter feel more personal and to show the reader who the editor is.
At the very bottom right hand corner will be the page number to tell the reader what page they are on and to help them navigate through the magazine easier.

Double Page Spread

My double page spread will follow the rule of thirds and will be split into three columns. The first column will be the largest of the three and will be the main DPS image. It will overlap both pages to show that the pages have a relation. The main image will be an extreme close up of my model facing away from the camera looking to the right side. The main lighting for this image will come off the floor and will create a mysterious effect. This links in with the indie rock genre because the image will be quite dark which relates to the indie rock music and people often relate darkness and dark colours to indie rock.
The headline will be white text and the font will be Calibri this fits in with the house style of the magazine and helps to anchor the image the text will read ‘Kimberley Anne Ryans ‘ the text anchors the image and tells the reader who the model is and what and who the article is about. The text will be large to catch the reader’s attention.
In the bottom right hand corner of the main image will be a grab quote out of the DPS article this will catch the reader’s attention and make them want to read more of the article to find out about the artist. The grab quote will be in speech marks and will be in large bold text, Calibri font to once again reinforce the house style of the magazine.
In the bottom right hand corner of each page will be the page number. This will tell the reader what page they are on and will help them navigate through the magazine easier. And in the top left hand corner of the page will be the magazine name. This reinforces the name and helps establish it. This is important as it is the first issue of the magazine and the name needs to stick in the readers mind so they will remember it and therefore buy it again.
The second column will be the start of the DPS article. The article will be Calibri font black text size 10.The first letter of the first word of the article will be Large and red to draw the reader into the start of the article and makes them want to read the article. It also tells the reader where the start of the article is and once again reinforces the magazines house style.
The third column will be the same however the third column will have a grab quote in to draw the reader in once again and to make the article more appealing and interesting and makes the reader want to read on. The grab quote will be in speech marks and will be in large bold text, Calibri font to once again reinforce the house style of the magazine.
Red thin lines will separate the columns and will link in with the style lines that separated the information on the contents page. This helps reinforce house style.
